about

This was the first song I wrote after losing my mother. In her later days, we shared our interest in ancient history. I weaved references to the Nineteen Old Poems of Han Dynasty China into the lyrics, and they are my vehicle to express the way I miss the people I lost so much.

lyrics

Within the old palace gate, how still the grounds are today
Trees growing from the remains
How many died where they stood, limbs petrified like the wood
That lies in heaps underfoot
And all the things they held dear, each little lie, every fear
It's all meant nothing for years
A marble horse on the lawn, no matching chariot to draw
A symbol of glory gone

A lifetime seldom reaches a hundred
Though it gives you a thousand years' sorrow
But it holds beauties I could not number
Don't ever let them go

These stones were once city streets, all uniform and discrete
It's like they willed it to be
And just how long has it been since incense passed on the wind
From merchants on the north end
Feels like forever ago since there were more than just ghosts
Around the place I called home
I wish there was a road back, to see old faces amassed
For miles and years in the past

Sometimes there's nothing you can come home to
And the way back is barricaded
But even still I would never undo
The glory days I navigated

I'll never stop missing that time
It was simpler and things were alright
I have a new chance to go on
And I can write my own denouement

I want to untie the knot
I'll give it all that I got
I want to untie the knot
I want to untie the knot
I'll give it all that I got
I want to untie the knot
